The hollow metal pointers contain a certain amount of water.
They are set opposite markers and then left to their own devices. They move with variations in temperature.
They are uncontrolled, moving of their own accord and pointing to different elements in a game of chance. For example, the pointer can be opposite a scale that alternates the words YES and NO, or a series of children's shoes.
To within a degree, it points to one element rather than another. Are not our future, our encounters, just such a game of chance? These works, too, invite participation. The visitor has to place objects (such as eggs, books or magnets) opposite the pointers. These can shift in a few seconds, showing how impossible it is to achieve perfect equilibrium in the world around us. |
